Our Story

After working for several years in the generator industry, Pat Carolan struck out on his own to found Emergency Power Controls in 1984. At first EPC was just a one-man shop as Pat grew his customer base and made a name for himself in the industry. Pat quickly earned a reputation for his reliability and safety-first approach to electrical work. And that was just the beginning.

Growth by leaps and bounds

Today, EPC boasts projects in a dozen different states and seven countries around the globe. EPC provides support to critically important facilities, like high rise buildings, hospitals, military bases, and data centers, to name just a few. Clients range from entertainment entities like ESPN, Disneyland, and SeaWorld San Diego, to organizations including NASA, Cedars Sinai Medical Center, and other Fortune 500 companies.

Around the industry, EPC is known for our expertise in the field of automatic transfer switches. Beyond emergency power services, we also provide new electrical installation, switch gear modifications, and upgrades, to name just a few.

EPC’s growth didn’t happen by accident. We’ve continued to grow over the years because of our focus on customer satisfaction and fair, consistent pricing. Whether providing new installation, diagnostic services, preventive maintenance, or troubleshooting, EPC is committed to ensuring our clients experience only the highest level of service, even offering 24/7 on-call support when applicable.

Safety is Our Top Priority

EPC is the exclusive independent authorized ATS service provider for ABB in Southern California. The EPC team knows that staying up to date on the latest best practices leads not only to safer working conditions but reduces future liability for our clients. EPC accomplishes this by performing Arc Flash analyses, complete with the addition of Arc Flash warning labels to indicate the level of protection required.

All EPC technicians are trained and certified to the highest standards in the industry, including

  • NFPA 110 Standard for Emergency and Standby Power
  • NFPA 70B Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance
  • NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace.

A Culture of Caring

Though our service offerings are wide ranging, EPC remains a small company. The personal, first-name-basis environment, ongoing training, and industry-leading pay and benefits packages mean a positive employee culture with a family feel. And that extends to our clients as well. Some of our clients have been with us for decades, and will likely remain for decades to come.
